Deep Cleanings

This type of cleaning is for someone that has periodontal disease.  Periodontal disease is caused when gums, ligaments, and bone are attacked by bacteria infections.   Periodontal disease is painless and progresses quite rapidly or slowly.   Regular dental cleanings and exams will help make you aware of the problem and help in the prevention.

Scaling and Root Planning

This type of cleaning, depending on the severity, may require more than one visit.   Scaling goes beneath the gumline and removes plague and tarter.  In some cases, a local anesthestic can be given to reduce discomfort.  During this procedure, plague and tarter are removed to the bottom of each pocket.  Then, the tooth's root surfaces are smoothed to allow the tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.  After the treatment has been completed, a follow-up appointment is needed so that the pockets can be re-evaluated.

X-Rays

As a new patient, x-rays will be taken to help in diagnosis and treatment.  If possible, any previous x-rays can be requested.  This will help in revealing previous dental activity.  When possible, a full mouth series of x-rays will be taken.   Otherwise, a series of 4 pariapical x-rays and 4 bitewing x-rays will be taken.   Current patients will have 4 periapicals and 4 bitewing x-rays taken once a year.

Full Mouth X-Rays

This is a series of 8 x-rays (both periapical and bitewing).  These x-rays will show the teeth, roots, and related areas of the jaws.

Bitewing X-Rays

These x-rays help in showing cavities between the teeth and changes in the bone.

Periapical X-Rays

These x-rays show the crowns and roots of the teeth.  These x-rays help in the diagnosis of impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts, tumors, and bone patterns.

Sealants

A sealant is used to provide a shield from threats to the health of teeth.  A sealant decreases the potential of decay by protecting cavity prone areas from food and bacteria.  Sealants are one of the steps to protecting teeth and keeping them healthy.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment is needed when a cavity becomes infected and an abscess is caused on the nerve tissue.  The nerve tissue is cleaned and medication is placed at the first of two visits.  At the second visit the canals of the tooth are filled and sealed.  After treatment, the tooth should be restored, usually with a crown.

Crowns

Crowns are needed to protect and strengthen brittle teeth, broken teeth, teeth with large fillings, or a tooth that has had a root canal.  There are two visits required before the treatment is complete:  tooth preperation and cementing the crown.   The tooth preperation consists of trimming the tooth on all sides.  A temporary crown is made until the permanent one is ready.  The second visit is very brief, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented in place.
